Design skills and a quality portfolio are a given when we meet new artists. And so I wasn’t surprised when Kathleen Lamphere arrived for her interview with wonderful work to share. Other qualities impressed me even more: her temperament, conviviality and ability to articulate her creative choices.
There are many talented people in the world. But a difficult personality can slow you down. We prefer to work with those who begin each work day with a “happy to be here” spirit. They smile, engage and help keep up the positive energy needed to get through demanding assignments and deadlines.
After spending time looking and hearing about Kathleen’s work and experience, we moved away from her artistic output and encouraged her to speak about broader topics. The designers who succeed at IMAGE: Global Vision are well-rounded, curious and generous toward the ideas of others. That’s a very good description of Kathleen.
This is not to say that she doesn’t come with high recommendations from other studios and designers we respect, and lots of production experience. Also, I was thrilled that she has excellent typographical skills. These days it is hard to find someone with this background because many designers now have grown up on personal computers and are not well versed in typography in its truest forms, its history and embodiments, which we dearly love.
