Andaz San Diego Opens another Port for Hyatt's New Global Hotel Brand

Today's opening of the Andaz San Diego is a good example of how a global brand can be original and consistent yet flexible. Launched by Hyatt in 2007, Andaz embodies personal style and easy uncomplicated sophistication in a variety of diverse settings. It all began in London, then moved to West Hollywood and back east to Wall Street before bouncing to the port city of San Diego.

Our concept and design approach starts with place. San Diego to us is a quintessential southern California beach city known for its laid back bohemian lifestyle. A community enriched by a unique mix of colors and cultures with strong influences from its southern neighbor — Mexico.

San Diego is also an eclectic and interesting mindscape that somehow manages to artfully blend tourism, technology and the military with the surfer/skater gone philosopher. The property formerly know as The Ivy Hotel is located in the Historic Gaslamp Quarter of the city, and with a wink to its past is transforming from decadent funhouse to joie de vivre, sensual sophistication.

Andaz San Diego is a fusion of the southern Californian and St. Tropez sunlight. It is naturally beautiful, intelligently funny, both familiar and mysterious, wrapped into one stunning package which one easily takes to the beach by day, the formal at night and whatever comes after...
